Weighing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Outsourcing School Cleaning Services

A school teacher sitting at a table crowded with books while looking up at a chalkboard drawing of a scale with the words [cleaning service] written along the side.

Overseeing a school campus is a large responsibility. Cleaning and sanitation are only one of the many priorities competing for your attention. Keeping a busy campus clean has always been a challenge, but in the current climate, having an orderly and hygienic school isn't just an ambition; it is a necessity.

Fortunately, there are several options available to help you achieve the goal of having a well-kept facility. To help you decide which choice is right for your school, we will explore the available janitorial service options

School Cleaning Service Options

There are three main options to consider to improve the quality of the cleaning services at your school:

  • Staying with the existing service provider;
  • In-sourcing; or
  • Hiring a new cleaning company.

All three of these options offer advantages and disadvantages. We discuss the pros and cons of each option below.

Option 1: Stay with Existing Service

Familiarity is the main reason people choose to stay with their current cleaning service provider even when they are unsatisfied with their work. For example, many people routinely go to the same hairdresser for years, receiving the same haircut over and over, even after their look becomes outdated. Why do people do this? It is a routine, a habit that has become automatic. Sometimes a change is needed to improve a situation.

It is reasonable to address issues with an existing janitorial service and allow them an opportunity to correct their mistakes. However, if poor quality service continues, you may want to consider other options.

Option 2: Hire in-house (in-sourcing)

Having direct control over school cleaning services can make hiring in-house staff seem attractive. However, there are several limitations to going this route.

First, hiring employees to work only in one location is generally more expensive than having employees available to work at multiple locations. This can make having in-house janitorial staff more costly than hiring an outside school campus cleaning company. Further, bear in mind that someone will need to supervise in-house cleaning staff on an ongoing basis. Also, time will need to be spent screening, hiring, replacing, and training new janitorial employees. When you hire an outside cleaning company, all of these tasks become their responsibility, saving you time and frustration.

Option 3:  Hire a New Cleaning Company

After a long summer vacation, students and teachers often look forward to a new school year with excitement and a touch of nervousness. They wonder what their new class will be like and who they will meet. Working with a new company is a little bit like that. We are all slightly hesitant to work with someone new but excited about the possibilities at the same time.

The reasons for hiring a new school cleaning company usually have to do with a concern about the current quality of service. However, this isn't always the case. Sometimes you want to see if there is a better fit for your school. It may be possible to find a company that provides better customer service, is more flexible with schedules, or is more cost-effective.

What to Look for In a School Cleaning Service

If you do decide it is time to look for a new school janitorial services company, consider if the company meets the following criteria:

  • Reasonable cost
  • Flexible schedule
  • Experienced, licensed, and bonded
  • Acceptable Hiring practices, including background checks
  • A strong employee training program
  • Compliance with state regulations

Most importantly, find a janitorial services company that will partner with you to maintain your school's cleanliness, safety, and reputation. Hire an experienced company that can provide excellent references.
